Essential really wants to solve the screen notch problem PDF Print E-mail

essential phoneIn a way, Essential is something of a pioneer. Before the iPhone X helped the world reluctantly embrace the screen notch, the company proudly displayed one atop its first flagship. Since then, of course, it’s become a feature, not a bug, with a long list of companies rushing to embrace it on their latest flagship. But Essential’s clearly hoping to solve the issue with a number of patents looking to stick a camera directly behind the display. The Andy Rubin-founded company has been on quite a patent run in recent months — but the ones pertaining to a “camera integrated into a display” are the most compelling of the lot. And if it comes to fruition, it could breathe new life into the company’s upcoming handsets after an admittedly slow start. The patent describes a multi-layered display with camera in which a “substantially transparent region allows light from outside to reach the camera to record an image.” The patent points to a potential application in which the camera is mounted behind the LCD. In the imagery accompanying the post, the camera is positioned in its customary spot up top — you know, where the notch should be. In another iteration of the same idea, the camera is located behind the screen’s color layer and “records the light from the outside colored by the color filter layer.” There's more on this posted on OUR FORUM.

windows 10 error codeBack in 2015 when Microsoft rolled out Windows 10, the company promised to keep all versions of the operating system up-to-date with fixes, improvements and security changes. Microsoft has improved the way it handles updates for Windows 10, as a result, the software giant is releasing updates more frequently. Microsoft recently released Windows 10 KB4090913 with improvements and fixes. Windows 10 KB4090913 (opens Microsoft Update Catalog) is available for devices with Fall Creators Update, and it has a bug that crashes some system when attempting to install this update. Windows 10 KB4090913 fails to install with error 0x80070643, and shows an error reading “we could not complete the update, reverting changes”. When the update fails to install, Microsoft reverts the changes and restores the previous edition of the Windows 10 operating system without removing any of the files. There are only a handful number of reports particularly from Reddit of failed installs hitting Windows 10 KB4090913. For some, their PC is stuck on a process of downloading and reinstallation, with no proper option to pause the process. If you will try to reinstall the update, it will fail again, and in some cases, the PCs are rushed into an infinite loop that doesn’t stop. More details posted on OUR FORUM.

Bose's AR glassesBose announced today that it's getting into the augmented reality game. But Bose AR isn't about video, it's about audio and through a "wafer-thin acoustics package," the company says it can introduce a useful and relevant layer of audio into your everyday activities. Bose says the small audio technology produces powerful and clear sound and can be incorporated into wearables like headphones, eyewear, and helmets. "It places audio in your surroundings, not digital images, so you can focus on the amazing world around you -- rather than a tiny display," John Gordon, VP of the consumer electronics division at Bose, said in a statement. "It knows which way you're facing, and can instantly connect that place and time with endless possibilities for travel, learning, music and more. And it can be added to products and apps we already use and love, removing some of the big obstacles that have kept AR on the sidelines." Continued on OUR FORUM.

Windows 10 AndromedaWithout a doubt, Microsoft’s long-rumored foldable Andromeda is one of the most eagerly-anticipated products ever developed by the software giant. Popularly referred to as Surface Phone, Microsoft’s Andromeda is a foldable mobile-type device with Windows Core OS and ARM chipset. While there’s not even a single confirmation from Microsoft that ‘Surface Phone’ is on its way, a new unconfirmed rumor claims that the device might be unveiled or detailed as soon as the Spring of this year, before or after the company’s Build 2018 developer conference. Everything is however uncertain and such plans could change anytime, as it totally depends on the development of the rumored project. Microsoft’s long-rumored foldable Andromeda, better known as Surface Phone, might be unveiled in Spring of this year. ai chipsetDuring the Windows Developer Day event yesterday, Microsoft revealed the Windows AI platform which will allow developers to build intelligent apps on Windows 10. One of the highlighted features of WinML APIs is the support for pre-trained machine learning models. Windows ML will efficiently use hardware for any given artificial intelligence (AI) workload and intelligently distributes work across multiple hardware types including CPU, GPU and Intel’s Vision Processing Units (VPU). The Intel VPU is a purpose-built chip for accelerating AI workloads on client devices. Myriad X is world’s first system-on-chip (SOC) shipping with a dedicated Neural Compute Engine for accelerating deep learning inferences at the edge. The Neural Compute Engine is an on-chip hardware block specifically designed to run deep neural networks at high speed and low power without compromising accuracy, enabling devices to see, understand and respond to their environments in real time. Microsoft worked with Intel team to add support for VPUs in Windows ML platform. You can follow this thread on OUR FORUM.

Hellblade: Senua’s SacrificeXbox One players may be playing Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice in the near future according to a listing on a Taiwanese rating board. The PlayStation-console exclusive from Ninja Theory garnered acclaim for its production value which appeared greater than what an indie studio could normally achieve. It looks like this warm reception may be helping the developer launch it on more consoles. The rating (via Gematsu) unfortunately doesn’t reveal a planned release date. From what can be read in English on the page, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice from Ninja Theory was PEGI rated for Xbox One. Not a lot to go by, but this isn’t the first time a game’s release has leaked via a rating board, and it certainly won’t be the last. In addition to the Taiwanese rating, Hellblade was also recently rated again in Australia. this time as a multi-platform release. Though the Australian rating doesn’t specifically mention Xbox One, it’s hard to imagine a new multi-platform rating going up for the game without an imminent launch on other consoles. android pWe’re nearing the launch date of the first Android P Developer Preview, according to rumors. Little is known about the upcoming release in terms of user-facing features, though we’ve done our best to catalog all of the bits and pieces we’ve been able to find. The two biggest rumored changes coming to Android P include support for atypical display types (such as those with a ‘notch‘) and a revamped Material Design interface. Today, we’re also confident that Android P will finally add support for the Bluetooth HID device profile service, which will allow for your smartphone to be used as a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. Back in 2014, a patch was submitted by a member of Qualcomm’s CodeAurora forums that adds support for the Bluetooth HID device role. That patch was committed in December of 2016, however, the functionality remained disabled for subsequent Android releases. That appears to be changing with the release of Android P as we were sent a tip by XDA Member 500 Internal Server Error that two commits finally enable Bluetooth HID. We confirmed ourselves that this Bluetooth HID profile has only recently been added, as a comparison of the supported Bluetooth profiles in Android 8.1 Oreo (branch oreo-mr1-release) versus the latest master shows that the boolean value enabling HIDD has been flipped to true. windows media playerMicrosoft’s latest iteration of its popular OS, Windows 10 builds upon a completely different base. With the Microsoft Store and Universal Apps, Microsoft is trying to ditch the old and reliable x86 platform in favor of the modern UWP apps. Many of the old apps are being deprecated in favor of UWP apps, and it looks like the beloved Windows Media Player is next in the line. According to a post on Reddit, some users are getting a pop up asking them to switch to the Movies & TV app when opening video files in Windows Media Player. For those unaware, Movies & TV is a universal app from Microsoft for Windows 10 devices. As the name suggests, the app is used to play video files. The app also serves as a good-sized catalog of Movies and TV shows that can be downloaded or watched. Movies & TV first started Xbox Videos in Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 and then got renamed in Windows 10. It also got a UI uplift and became better with more new features, but like most UWP apps, it still has its limitations. Continue reading on OUR FORUM.
